Oranges are not the only fruit

But when it comes to making marmalade, then Seville Oranges definitely are the only fruit for me.

I did start off this year saying that I wouldn't make any more jams or chutneys.  I was worried that my family and friends were bored of receiving them for Christmas.

But it's Seville season.

How can I not make marmalade?

I use Delia Smith's recipe - just oranges, water & sugar (and a lemon to help the set).

Purple Sprouting

Pickings are a bit thin on the ground at the allotment right now.  It's my own fault as I have neglected it badly.  The Greyhound cabbage started off well and has provided the snails and slugs with a constant source of food!  There is not much left and what is, is not very appetising.

I had high hopes for the Brussels Sprouts but they haven't fulfilled their promise.  They just won't grow any bigger than a Malteaser.
But the Purple Sprouting Broccoli has delivered the goods:

beautifully!

Happy Birthday to me

It isn't my birthday until August,

but my Mother-in-law has always said that when a child has a birthday,

then it should really be the mother who receives a gift, to mark all the effort she has put in!

What a fabulous idea.

She gave me these flowers on our elder daughter's birthday.

Birthday Girl

Our elder daughter has recently had her 14th birthday.  What sort of cake would you like me to make you, I asked.  Well, what I'd really like is one of those synthetic, sugary chocolate party cakes from a supermarket.  Oh, I said.

Shall we go out for supper, or would you like me to make you something special, I asked.  Well, what I'd really like is a take out McDonalds. Oh, I said.

Honestly, doesn't she appreciate home cooking?!

Anyway, Happy Birthday lovely girl. xx

RIP Dave

We are just at the start of the lambing season, which for the sheep my husband looks after, officially starts on 14th February this year.  This is the date when the lambs should start to be born, ready to be the first Spring lambs to market.  Harsh, but if we didn't eat them, then it would be unlikely that sheep would be in our landscape at all.

We have already started asking when we can have another orphan lamb to raise.  My husband is dead set against the idea, but I hope between the three of us, we can wear him down!

You may remember that last year we were lucky enough to have Dave.  He really was a special sheep and we re-homed him, rather than let him continue down the road for which he should have been destined.  These photos are from last May and June, when Dave was living with his new and motley flock.

This Dave, looking really quite stout.

This one is a Southdown - they always look like little old men to me.

Waiting not very patiently for a bottle.

Dave had an enormous appetite and could drain a bottle of milk in seconds.

An idyllic place to live out your days.

Sadly, shortly after these pictures were taken, Dave developed some sort of problem with his intestines and he died.  Given his greedy nature, we have a suspicion he ate himself into an early grave.

Dave, gone.

Biscuits & Books

Today, I am treating myself to these

and this

Now, I love chocolate as much as the next person, but for me it needs to be on its own - just a bar - not in a cake, or pudding or wrapped around a biscuit.  In my opinion the best biscuits are shortbread or oat cookies, follow by a cup of Earl Grey tea.  Add in a good book and I'm a happy girl.

Oat Cookies

125g SR Flour
75g Caster Sugar
100g Soft margarine
1 teaspoon Vanilla Essence
Oats

Cream the marg & sugar, add vanilla, mix in the flour.  Roll into about 15 balls, dip in cold water and dip in the oats.  Place on greased baking tray and flatten slightly.  Bake 10-15 minutes at 180o/gas 4.

Frost

We have missed out on the recent snow.  I'm half way between relieved and disappointed.  It did start to flurry on Thursday evening, but came to nothing at all and when we got up on Friday morning, it had all but disappeared.
It has been bloody cold though, and we even had icicles hanging off the front window.
Although we haven't woken to anything resembling deep and crisp and even, we have been graced with a beautiful frost.  These pictures are from the attic bedroom.

The frost on the window made it look like etched glass and the sky behind was a bright, cloudless blue.

As soon as the sun came round, little rivers started to run down the window.

and within a few minutes the frost had evaporated.

On reflection, this is probably a better option than snow.
